In 1990 Betty Lee, also known fondly as Mamalee, and her husband brought their family to Canada. Shortly after she bought Café D’Lite at 2817 W Broadway where she began serving tasty Malaysian dishes as a taste of home in her new country. After 15 years at that address a new development was in the works and they needed to move. Betty wanted to stay in the same Kitsilano neighbourhood so they ended up moving only a few blocks away where the new location became even busier.
In 2013, Betty’s family proudly renamed the Cafe D’Lite as Mamalee to reflect Betty’s passion and commitment to Malaysian cuisine. Most days you will find Betty busy cooking up delicious dishes for a packed room while her kids help out running the restaurant. She and her family enjoy seeing many of their previous customers, originally local students and couples, who still frequent the new Mamalee with their children.
