Hunters Garden Centre is a family-run, full service garden centre that has been in business for 63 years. Throughout their time in business they have had multiple locations and divisions, including landscaping and maintenance operations at one time. Their previous West Broadway location was open for 49 years, and after a 2-year hiatus we were happy to have them back in the heart of Kitsilano!
“The new store was chosen because we wanted to stay in the community that supported us for so long. I love the people that live and work in the community and how they walk and bike to our store.” They currently also have a location in Surrey and both locations are now run by Miles Hunter, founder David’s grandson. “David learned about gardening from his father and so it has been a family passion for 4 generations” he says.
Their employees and customers seem equally as dedicated to the business. “Our first store manager, Duncan, has been working for us since 1960. He only works a few days a year in spring now but he has been a fixture in the store and the community for over 50 years.”
Long-time Kitsilano residents may also have fond memories of the store. “There are customers that have been visiting us since they were children and their parents brought them to our store,” says David. “I attribute our success as a company to the community we serve. They have always supported us and we do our best to support them.”
Has he always had the Hunter family green thumb? “I knew from an early age that I enjoyed working in the garden centre so I was pretty sure that I was going to stay in this industry.”
